Dubai Motor Show 2013

Let me begin by saying that yes indeed, this is one of those days to which I look forward to eagerly not only because it is my special time with my favourite metal, but also since it occurs only once every two years.

As always, the Dubai Motor show did not disappoint even this time. Spread across several massive exhibition halls at the Convention Centre - Dubai World Trade Centre, this was every car lover's dream come true opportunity.

I could feel the excitement as my heart rate kept on rising as I kept getting closer and closer to the venue and at the same time I was imagining as to what all I would be doing at the Motor Show. I was definitely looking forward to my favourite stand of each time, the BUGATTI ! To see those Veyrons LIVE in the flesh is really an out of this world experience. You wonder how well has man managed to create this car which is no less than a Rocket on the roads.

As I entered the first hall, having bought my ticket and put on that wrist band the first car I laid my eyes on was the Dubai Police Bentley Continental. Truly elegant vehicle. Now, I wonder if one would have to commit a crime in order to get to ride in one. Haha.

Moving on there were huge display stands from all major manufacturers around the globe like Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Ford, GMC, Cadillac and the list goes on and on.

Lot's of shimmering lights to make these cars shine in your face. All cars were absolutely clean and gleaming. The interiors had that new car fragrance and every button, every knob was new and un-used.

Ample opportunities to sit behind the wheel of that dream car which you've always wanted.

There were many regional launches too, like the new Toyota Corolla, BMW X5, GMC Yukon, Ford Fusion, Dodge Viper, Jeep Cherokee, Bentley Shaheen.

Lot's of freebies were being given out by some of the car brands which the public was grabbing even without knowing what they are taking. Some were just giving out posters and that too had many takers.

No motor show is complete without abundant photo opportunities. I noticed that almost every individual there had a camera around their neck and that too the SLR kinds. Even small kids were at it.

It was bothering to see that some were only interested to take their pics with cars and not even a glance at the car specs etc.

I also did notice that a few brands were missing from the show, like Subaru, Lotus, Volvo, Seat, Renault (their Duster is a mass favourite), Daihatsu, Suzuki, MG.

There was a huge increase in Far East brands on display such as Great Wall, DFM, BYD Motors etc.

All in all I had a great time here, so much that I went to this show two consecutive days in a row. I too have my share of photographs from the show and am putting up a few here.

Can't wait for November 2015, when the next Motor Show returns to  Dubai.

CARNAMA - Episode 30 - Difference between car polish and car wax !

CARNAMA – Episode 30 – Difference between Car Polish and Car Wax!

Hi friends, have you ever thought what is better to use on your car, polish or wax? Are they different or are they the same? Or is it a chalta hain attitude?

The answer is that car polish and car wax serve different purposes.

Polish is a slightly abrasive material which sands the surface of paint to smooth and allows it to shine.

Wax is a non-abrasive coating which protects the paint finish and fills in the dents in the paint to make it shine.

Putting car wax over a bad paint job will not enhance the appearance of the paint and therefore waxing should be the final work only.

Years of dirt, grime and sunlight can degrade the paint finish of a car. This can be repaired by polishing.

But beware, each time you polish your car, you are actually removing a small surface of paint and if you do this too often, you will end up having to re-spray the car.

Many scratches from keys, scrapes in car parking and other surface damages can be completely removed with polishing.

Thanks, end of Season 1 !

CARNAMA - Episode 29 - Maintenance of car AC

CARNAMA – Episode 29 – How to maintain car AC !

So u are already tired of the heat outside? And just when u are about to travel I your car, you realise that the AC isn’t cooling enough and you have to roll down your car windows instead.

Well, the problem lies in the fact that many people ignore maintenance of the car A/C. Just filling gas is not sufficient.

Here’s some tips on how to keep your car’s AC running cool all year:

•Check the condition of the air filter as a dirty air filter may clog up the air passages and reduce the coolness of the AC. You can clean the air filter with water and soap. If it is too dirty or damaged, replace with a new one.

•Excess moisture can cause bad smell in your AC system. You can reduce moisture by running the car AC for longer periods or even by switching ON the defroster for about 15 minutes or so.

•Once in a month run the car’s AC on full cold and highest fan speed for 15-20 minutes.

•Timely check for any leakages in the hose pipes.

•Maintain clean evaporator coils. Replace damaged evaporator coils.

•Be gentle when using the car AC switches.

•Finally, do get the AC gas topped up regularly from an authorised outlet.

So go ahead and enjoy your drive in the hot summer with CARNAMA confidence !

CARNAMA - Episode 28 - Flex Fuel

CARNAMA – Episode 28 – Flex Fuel!

Now what kind of fuel is Flex Fuel?

I drive a Ford Expedition and it has this ‘Flex Fuel’ sign badge at the back. That made me think as to what kind of petrol do I use in my vehicle.
...
A Flexible Fuel Vehicle or FFV is an alternative fuel vehicle with an internal combustion engine designed to run on more than one fuel, usually gasoline blended with either ethanol or methanol fuel.

FFVs have been produced since the 1980s, and dozens of models are currently available. Since FFVs look just like gasoline-only models, you may be driving an FFV and not even know it.

How to check if your vehicle is a FFV?

Check the colour of your car’s fuel cap. Most manufacturers started putting yellow gas caps on FFVs as of model year 2008.

Some cars have labels on the fuel door indicating the fuel type.

Look for ‘flex fuel’ badge on your car’s body, like I found on my vehicle.

In fuel economy testing, the E85 vehicles achieve less kms more per gallon (mpg) than their gasoline-fueled counterpart since Ethanol contains less energy per gallon as compared to gasoline.

So check your vehicles and tell us if you are driving a ‘Flex fuel’ automobile.

CARNAMA - Episode 27 - Crash Test Certification !

CARNAMA – Episode 27 – Crash Test Certification

You would never imagine that your car should meet with an accident. No way !

However, accidents are just that – accidents. They are not planned and happen suddenly, for which you may or may not be prepared.

Now, what does happen when cars meet with accidents? External damage to the car body and possible harm to its occupants?

In order to minimise injury and possible death to the occupants of cars, car manufacturers have to follow the strict guidelines on crash safety test standards.

One such Standard of crash test is the 5 Star rating established by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in USA.

It's simple: More Stars equal Safer Cars. 5-Star Safety Ratings measure the crash worthiness

Also called the New Car Assessment Program (NCAP), the 5-Star Safety Ratings System was created by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to provide consumers with information about the crash protection and rollover safety of new vehicles beyond what is required by statute. One star is the lowest rating, five stars is the highest. More stars equal safer cars.  Five stars is the highest rating, one is the lowest.

The 5-Star Safety Ratings System was initiated in 1978 to measure the level of increased safety for vehicle occupants in frontal crashes. Side crash rating results were added with 1997 model year vehicles and rollover assessments with 2001 models. This is a program that encourages manufacturers to voluntarily design safer vehicles by giving them safety ratings that can be used by consumers to compare vehicles when shopping for a new car.

So next time when you go shopping for a new car, be sure to ask about the 5-Star safety rating of the car. Who knows, a small question like this could prove to be a saviour of you and your loved ones !

CARNAMA - Episode 26 - AIRBAGS !

CARNAMA – Episode 26 – AIRBAGS!

We are all worried about our safety, at each and every turn in life and in our cars!
The seatbelt used to be the only safety restraint feature in a car, until there came the airbag.

Did you know the first car manufacturer to offer driver and front passenger airbags as a standard feature was CHRYSLER. They started this in 1988!

Since then all car manufacturers have made it a standard in all their cars.

There are two types of airbags; frontal and the various types of side-impact airbags. Advanced frontal air bag systems automatically determine if and with what level of power the driver frontal air bag and the passenger frontal air bag will inflate. The appropriate level of power is based upon sensor inputs that can typically detect: 1) occupant size, 2) seat position, 3) seat belt use of the occupant, and 4) crash severity.

The purpose of airbags is to slow an occupant's motion as evenly as possible in a fraction of a second in a crash. Airbags are supplemental restraints and work best in combination with seatbelts.

Frontal airbags are deployed in less than 50 milliseconds. Airbags for side protection have to be fully inflated within 15 milliseconds, which is eight times faster than the blink of an eye. Once an airbag deploys, deflation begins immediately as the gas escapes through vent holes in the fabric. A frontal airbag is empty after approximately one second.

CARNAMA - Episode 24 - Car Window Tinting

CARNAMA – Episode 24 – Tinted Windows!

Yes friends, tinted windows or Kaara Kaanchh (in sindhi). How many of us think that having blackened windows in cars was a sure indication of a movie star inside the car ? Well that ain’t true at all.

Car window tinting is one of the best ways to improve the look of your vehicle. It adds style and elegance to the appearance and also has other benefits.

Doing proper tinting of car window panes will guard you against the striking sunlight in hot summer. It will also save the upholstery of your car getting heated, discolored or damaged by ultraviolet rays of sunlight. The life of upholstery in car gets enhanced approximately by proper tinting of car windows. The upholstery remains like new for a longer period. The tinting of car window panes will stop the UV rays almost completely, thereby saving the car's upholstery as well as the people traveling in it especially in the hot sun for a longer time.

Depending on your selection of tint, up to 65% of the Sun's total energy can be reflected away from your vehicle. If your vehicle is fitted with air-conditioning this should provide savings on your fuel and running costs. Not only that but tinting can reduce interior fading and help maintain the value of your vehicle.

In the event of a broken window, tinting film protects the occupants of the vehicle from flying glass by holding shattered glass in place.

There is a variety of window tints available at affordable costs. It is better to first explore about the tints and make enquiries about their quality and prices before you settle for the one of your choice. You can see the samples with the shops and find out what tints are good and popular and also ascertain the capability of the tinting shop.

So go ahead and get the tinting done on your car and feel like a movie star yourself !

CARNAMA - Episode 23 - Preparing your car for summer

CARNAMA – Episode 23 – Preparing your car for Summer!

Hi friends, most of you have started to feel the change in the weather as temperatures are gradually on the rise, particularly in the Middle East and India. So it’s that moment when you must heed to the cry of your car or else you’ll end up driving in a mobile microwave oven.

Here are some tips to maintain your car during the heat months:

Make sure you get your car serviced before the onslaught of serious summer heat.

The car engine needs to be readied to face the harsh driving conditions of summer. Ensure that the coolant levels are topped up and so are the oil levels. Please use ‘coolant’ only, avoid water.

Check transmission fluids and brake fluids. This is good to ensure every part of your car is protected against overheating.

Ask your service center to check all hoses of your car and ensure he tightens them.

Check the conditions of your car tyres, particularly those driving in the intense heat conditions of Middle East. Don’t be kanjoos and replace your tyres if found worn out.

Replace the air filters.

Check the condition of the wipers and replace if necessary.

The most important part to help you survive the summer heat is your car’s air-conditioning. Make sure the gas is topped up and there are no leakages. Clean your AC flow tubes from any dried leaves etc.

Get your car windows tinted (within the permissible limit as per your local law). This will protect the interiors from the harsh summer heat.

Buy a good pair of sun glasses for a comfortable drive and to avoid glare.

CARNAMA - Episode 22 - Car Servicing !

CARNAMA – Episode 22 – Car Servicing !

Hi friends, just this morning I have dropped off my car for routine servicing at the workshop. I do give it at the dealer service center.

It’s a fact that many people think that car servicing is basically just detail car washing. The truth is that it’s not!

Here are some of the fine points to follow when giving your car for service:

The first and foremost is to know when to give your car for service. Most manufacturers recommend a periodic service at every 10,000 km of mileage. But, even if you don’t achieve this mileage, remember this thumb rule to service your car once every six months. This is a MUST!

Call and schedule your service appointment with the workshop in advance. If you have a preferred service attendant then ask for him to attend to your service call.
Before going to the service center, check your vehicle on your own and note down all those scratches/dents etc.

Note down any problems/issues in your vehicle that you want the service center to correct. Chances are that you might forget to remember the same when at the service center, so it’s better to write it down before.

Make sure the attendant checks the basics of your vehicle when receiving it.
Make sure he signs and stamps your service record book. This is very important as it evidences your servicing history.

Don’t readily agree to any recommendation you get from the service attendant. Their job is to sell. Think, question and then decide if you really need what is being recommended. If not sure, call a friend and discuss.

Service agents might also try to sell you some vehicle accessories. Now remember accessories are just that – accessories. You don’t need to have them unless of course it is affordable as per your budget.

When receiving the vehicle back from service, don’t be in a hurry to pick up your car and drive out quickly.

Take some time to check all the basic functions of the car at the service center itself. If needed ask for a mechanic to accompany you for a test drive. Point out anything you feel has not been attended to as per your liking.

If any parts were replaced, ask for the old parts that were changed.

Ensure your vehicle has been washed properly from the exterior and vacuumed from the interior.

Dealer maintenance and servicing does cost a bit more than regular garages, but in the long run and from my personal experience, I can promise you that it does help save a lot of stress on yourselves and your vehicle will feel like new for many many years !

CARNAMA - Episode 21 - Engine Flushing

These days, you'll notice your service agent advising about a new 'recommended' maintenance item, Engine Flushing.

What exactly does it mean by the term Engine Flushing ? Flushing is the high pressure forcing of fluid back against the normal flow of the fluid. In other words if the normal flow is left to right, the flush would force the fluid right to left. This is accomplished by connecting a machine that will force special solvents back through the engine and transmission. The idea is that by forcing cleaning solvents backwards through the system, it will get all the junk and garbage that has formed over time and "flush" it out of the system. In theory this may be great, but in actual practice, it’s dangerous.

Flush machines do what they say; they force high pressure cleaning solvents back through the engine and transmission and clean out some of the accumulated junk that has formed. Now engines have small passages and galleries through which oil or automatic transmission fluid flow and there are one-way valves that keep the fluids from backtracking for whatever reason. By using an aggressive cleaning procedure like flushing, large chunks of accumulated sludge are broken off and forced backwards through these galleries and valves and, more often than not, lodge tightly and block them. This cuts off the normal flow of the fluid and causes lack of lubrication in an engine and abnormal or no shifting in a transmission. The results are expensive repairs, or more often, engine or transmission replacement.

Timely changing of your motor oil is good enough for your engine care and longer lasting performance.

CARNAMA - Episode 20 - Rear Defroster

Episode 20 - CARNAMA - Rear Defroster !

You must have experienced this mostly during the mornings. Your car windows are covered with moisture. What do you do ? Take a piece of cloth and start wiping the windows, but the mositure returns !!!

When the temperature inside is warmer than the temperature outside, this can cause the water molecules to go through a process called condensation. Moisture is everywhere, even in a car that is just sitting. And because of interior items such as carpets, seats and other cloth or vinyl upholstery items, the outside metal surface of the car will get much colder than the interior. This causes moisture to form on the windows, especially on a cold or rainy day. Defrosters combat this phenomenon so that drivers can see out the windows and operate the vehicle safely.

The rear window on most automobiles has tiny lines going through it. These are actually electrical wires, which heat up when current flows through them. In this manner, the resulting heat is used to displace the condensation on the inside of the window, but can also work on the outside. The heating elements have very low heat so humans are in no danger of getting burnt if they are touched while powered on. They put out just enough heat to combat the moisture built up on the window. They are usually wired along the roofline of the car, underneath the headliner.

Some wew model automobiles are starting to come out with heating elements in the front windshield, as well, which will negate the need to let the vehicle warm up before turning on the defroster.

CARNAMA - Episode 19 - Wheel Alignment

Episode 19 - CARNAMA - Wheel Alignment

Everybody does it but doesn't ask this question, "what is wheel alignment and why do i have to get it done?"

In simple words, Wheel alignment consists of adjusting the angles of the wheels so that they are parallel to each other and perpendicular to the ground, thus maximizing tire life and ensures straight drive along a straight and level road.
...
Wheel Alignment should be checked whenever new tires are installed, suspension components installed, when the vehicle has encountered a major road hazard or hit a kerb/footpath.

The primary static suspension angles that need to be measured and adjusted are caster, camber and toe, as shown in the diagram.

Advantages of wheel alignment are:

When your wheels are aligned properly, it cuts down on rolling resistance, which means that you car doesn't have to work as hard or burn as much fuel in order to move forward.

Even the slightest problem with your alignment can have disastrous effects on your tires. If your tires have too much or too little toe-in, a narrow strip on each tire will wear down very quickly, causing you to have to get new tires sooner. By getting regular wheel alignments, you ensure that your tires wear evenly, making them last as long as possible.

Having the wheels out of alignment can be stressful on the rest of the car, too. It means that you continually need to put pressure on the steering system in order to keep the car straight, and when you brake you often feel the car pull even more sharply, indicating that the brakes are needing to work harder on one side than the other.

One of the biggest advantages of having your wheels aligned properly is that your car is easier to drive. No annoying pull to one side or the other. It's much easier and more pleasant to drive a car that has had regular wheel alignments.

CARNAMA - Episode 18 - Driving in the Rain

Episode 18 – CARNAMA – Driving in the Rain

Hi Friends, so when it rains specially over the weekend, many of us want to make most of such weather (particularly in Gulf countries) and go out for a picnic or a leisurely drive. But did you know that this leisure drive in the rain is risky too. Have you ever considered that you need to be extra alert when driving during rainy weather? Here are some tips to guide you:

Ensure your car’s wipers are in good condition. Refer to CARNAMA Episode 2 for wiper maintenance.
...
•Drive slowly as it takes longer to stop car in wet weather.

•Stay toward the middle lanes - water tends to pool in the outside lanes.

•Maintain increased distance from the car in front of you during wet weather.
•Drive in the tracks of a car ahead of you.

• Don't follow large trucks or buses too closely. The spray created by their large tires reduces your vision.

•Be more alert when driving in slippery conditions and watch out for brake lights in front of you.

•Avoid using your brakes; if possible, take your foot off the accelerator to slow down.

•Turn your headlights on even in a light rain, or in gloomy, foggy or overcast conditions. Not only do they help you see the road, but they'll help other drivers see you.

•Avoid off-road driving: it's hard to judge the actual depth of puddles and you can easily become stuck, even in an SUV.

•Never drive beyond the limits of visibility. At night rainy roads become especially treacherous. The glare of oncoming lights, amplified by the rain on your windscreen, can cause temporary loss of visibility while substantially increasing driver fatigue.

•Never drive through moving water if you can't see the ground through it; your car could be swept off the road.

•When driving through a puddle of uncertain depth, go slow. If it's deeper than the bottom of your doors, turn around and find another route. Deep water can cause serious damage to a modern car's electrical system.

Or the best would be to just stay at home and enjoy those Pakoras !!!

CARNAMA - Episode 17 - Nitrogen in Tyres

Episode 17 - CARNAMA - Nitrogen in Tyres !

Hi Friends ! Did u know that the air that you fill in your car tyres consists of a major percentage of Nirogen gas and less of oxygen. It also consists of some amount of water vapour.

A rubber tire is like a membrane, through which oxygen passes three times faster than nitrogen. As a result, the oxygen slowly leaks out through the rubber walls, which leads to under-inflation. This in turn leads to higher tire wear, decreased safety and comfort, and higher petrol costs. In addition, compressed air contains high levels of moisture, which can accelerate the corrosion of the tyre rim.

The difference between the pressure in a tire and the pressure outside, causes oxygen to pass through the tyre. Nitrogen is less likely to migrate through tire rubber than is oxygen, which means that your tire pressures will remain more stable over the long term.

You will not be able to feel any difference in the ride or handling or braking, unless your tire pressures were seriously out of spec and changing to nitrogen brought them back to the proper pressure.

Advantages of Nitrogen in Tires:
•Increased fuel efficiency
•Reduced CO2 emission
•Increased tyre life due to more stable tyre pressure and less oxidation of the tyre
•Increased safety results in more reliable tyre pressure, lower tyre temperature improved grip and handling
•Increased rim life because nitrogen is completely dry; no oxidation of the rim
•Longer term stability of the tyre pressure
•Better grip and handling
•Reduced fuel consumption
•Longer tyre life
•Enhanced safety No oxidation within the tyre

But, filling your car tyres with Nitrogen will be costly as that compared to compressed air.

So give it a try and feel the difference with Nitrogen Tyres !

7 - Switch ON the car and check all lights/indicators are working correctly.

8 - Do a test drive and listen for any unusual sounds/noises when turning or braking.

9 - Apply hard brakes to check response of the brake system.

10 - Note the chassis number and check with the dealer's workshop for service history and major parts replaced.

11 - Check all doors/ windows are opening and closing properly.

12 - If there's an onboard computer then get it tested at a service center having facility for this.

13 - Finally, if u r able to get underneath the car, check for rust formations.

So next time you decide to buy a used car, don't feel shy and go with the CARNAMA confidence ! And yes, do make sure that when you close one door, another doesn't open !!!

CARNAMA - Episode 15 - Parking Sensors

Episode 15 - CARNAMA - Parking Sensors

Hello people, having trouble parking ? No problem, here's a good solution for you, get parking sensors fitted to your car.

A sensor is placed on the rear bumper of the car, which is capable of both emitting and detecting ultrasound. As it pulses, a computer measures the time it takes for the sound it emits to be heard again. Parking sensors operate at a close range and some sensors have a minimum operating range. When the user set distance threshold is passed, the sensor will emit an audible sound alerting the driver that it is getting close to an object.

These sensors work on ultrasound theory. The ultrasound sensor is based on echo-location (like SONAR, the same thing bats use to navigate). The pitch, or frequency, of the sound is so high that humans cannot detect it, which is useful because it provides accuracy.

The ultrasonic parking sensor is considered the cheapest form of a parking sensor, thus it comes with several problems which other technologies address. The first is that it can miss small objects or objects which lay below the sensor's cone-shaped operating range and sometimes requires multiple sensors to be attached to the bumper to get full coverage on both sides of the car.

Now a days, the reverse parking sensor systems are accompanied with a view camera, that let's you 'see' the reverse view on a screen fitted in the car's dashboard.
Many car manufacturers are offering this as a standard feature on current models.

Now, who said parking a car is difficult anymore ?

CARNAMA - Episode 14 - Paint Protection Film

Episode 14 - CARNAMA - Paint Protection Film

Hi Everyone ! Let's begin the first Carnama of 2013 with something very interesting. Just try and recall that feeling when you purchased a new car and always wanted that your car should look new forever. You don't want those stone chip marks and paint wear off due to the weather.

Well there is a product to exactly achieve this for your new car (or even older cars). It's called Paint Protection Film (PPF). The clear coated urethane film helps preserve the paint finish while protecting surfaces vulnerable to stone chips, bug damage, abrasion, and weathering. Not only will your vehicle’s paint be preserved from these types of damages, the film will allow your paint to age naturally, and will not yellow from prolonged sun exposure. Additionally, you can clean and maintain your vehicle the same as before. The nearly invisible film can be washed and waxed just like the rest of the painted surfaces to retain that high gloss shine you expect.

These protective films are typically applied to the impact zones on vehicles parts, or otherwise vulnerable areas such as hoods, fenders, side mirrors, bumpers, grills, rocker panels, headlights covers, floodlights, car door protection, luggage areas, rear bumper decks, roof and A-pillars.

These are sometimes also referred to as Body Skins. There are many leading manufacturers providing the application service for such protection films, for e.g. 3M in Dubai.

So if you're gonna spend huge money on buying your dream car, just think of investing some more to protect your car from the harsh environmental impact.
